Thornspire is an original fantasy-inspired display typeface developed to explore how typography can become an expressive visual element rather than simply a tool for communicating written information. The project investigates how distinctive letterforms, recurring motifs and visual references can work together to establish atmosphere and contribute to the storytelling of a design. The concept draws inspiration from the visual language of rose thorns, magic and celestial imagery, combining these influences to create a typeface that feels dramatic, mysterious and enchanting.
The project focused on developing a complete uppercase alphabet while establishing a consistent visual system across each letterform. A key consideration throughout the design process was finding a balance between experimentation and legibility, ensuring that the more decorative qualities of the typeface remained effective at larger display sizes. Sharp, elongated serifs were introduced to reference the pointed and organic qualities of rose thorns, while geometric star motifs were incorporated to reinforce the celestial and magical influences. These details were particularly explored within the counters of the vowels, creating moments of visual interest that extend beyond the traditional structure of the letterforms.
