Hungover Garden is a sustainable branding concept centred around transforming discarded and unwanted household items into unique handmade hanging planters and windchimes. The project explores how design can encourage more thoughtful approaches to consumption and reuse by changing the way people perceive materials that might otherwise be considered waste. Rather than hiding the imperfections or previous purpose of each object, Hungover Garden celebrates them as part of what makes every piece distinctive, giving discarded materials a new decorative purpose, identity and sense of value.

The brand was developed around the quirky, playful and unconventional personality of the products, with the visual identity intentionally moving away from the polished and traditional aesthetics often associated with sustainability-focused brands. The handmade nature of the products became an important part of the design direction, influencing the use of organic forms, loose visual elements and a custom hand-drawn wordmark. These imperfect qualities were used intentionally to reflect the individuality of each upcycled piece and communicate the idea that sustainability does not need to feel serious or overly refined. Instead, the identity aims to make reuse feel creative, expressive and approachable.

Throughout the design process, the visual system was developed to create a recognisable identity that could adapt across different brand applications while maintaining its handmade character. Packaging and promotional imagery were used to showcase the products and communicate their transformation from discarded household objects into decorative pieces. The relationship between the physical products and the identity was an important consideration, ensuring that the branding complemented the unconventional materials and allowed their individuality to remain central to the overall experience.

The final outcome is a cohesive brand identity that transforms sustainability into something playful, expressive and full of character. Hungover Garden demonstrates how branding can help shift perceptions around discarded materials by presenting upcycling as an opportunity for creativity rather than simply an environmental responsibility. By giving unwanted objects a new purpose and visual identity, the project highlights the value that can be found in imperfection, individuality and handmade design, while creating a brand experience that feels distinctive, approachable and memorable.
